Nigerian Catholic bishops get schedule to meet with new Pope

Catholic bishops in Nigeria have obtained a schedule to travel to Rome and officially meet with the new Pope, Cardinal Robert Prevost.

The message to this effect reached the bishops at the weekend, according to the Catholic Bishop of Yola, Most Reverend Stephen Mamza.

Mamza explained during an interaction with newsmen in Yola that the scheduled visit, termed Ad Limina, will afford the Nigerian bishops the chance to speak one after the other with the pope.

“It was just yesterday we got a message of our Ad Limina,” Mamza told the newsmen at a press briefing on Sunday as part of events of the 2025 Communication Week of the Catholic Church.

He explained, “Ad Limina means the visit that bishops from many parts of the world to the Pope. The new Pope has just approved our Ad Limina visit by March next year. All the Catholic bishops in Nigeria will be in Rome for two weeks in March next year.”

He added that during the visit, each bishop will have one on one interaction with the holy father for between 10 and 15 minutes.

“We are privileged. Nigeria is one of the first countries that the pope has approved the Ad Limina visit,” Mamza said.

Speaking on the commemoration of this year’s World Communication Week, Mamza said the special week’s message – ‘Hope’ – is a call on Nigerians to have hope in the face of the widespread hopelessness that the austere economy has foisted on the country.

Reflecting that the full theme of the Communication week is ‘Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts’, the Catholic Bishop of Yola urged all Nigerians to extend love and goodwill to their neighbors and give them reason for hope.
