Footage shared by Trust TV captured moments of joy and celebration among the athletes shortly before the unexpected tragedy struck. The team was in a jubilant mood, celebrating their achievements, when disaster unfolded suddenly.
Aminu Idris, who leads the Kano State kickboxing squad, emotionally recounted the shocking turn of events.
Survivor Adebowale Francis gave a vivid account of the moments leading to the accident. His explanation painted a grim picture of how a normal trip home spiraled into tragedy:
“After the driver overtook a trailer—just at a normal speed—he tried to return to the right lane, but then the tire had issues. The left tire, close to the driver’s side, had a problem. He tried to control the vehicle and get it back into the lane, but we were already close to the edge of the bridge. He did his best, but couldn’t make it, so we just fell into the hole.”
Another injured athlete, still shaken by the ordeal, described the moment of horror and how he was able to assist fellow victims despite his own pain:
As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, the priority has shifted to recovery and rehabilitation for the survivors. The entire sports community in Kano and beyond has been deeply affected by the incident, offering prayers and support for the injured and grieving.
Despite the trauma and losses, the surviving athletes have expressed immense gratitude for being alive and for the assistance rendered by good Samaritans at the scene.
