Amaechi: Everybody Knows He Was The Most Pompous Speaker; He Was Living In London As A Speaker-Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has fired back at former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, following the latter’s recent remarks about the state of the nation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike dismissed Amaechi’s assertion that Nigeria is currently experiencing widespread hunger. He accused Amaechi of deliberately spreading falsehoods about the country’s socio-economic situation, especially on the occasion of his 60th birthday celebrations.

Wike alleged that Amaechi’s comments were politically motivated and stemmed from a personal ambition for power rather than genuine concern for Nigerians. According to the FCT Minister, Amaechi’s narrative about hunger is not only misleading but also contradictory, given his long tenure in various political offices without raising similar issues.

He remarked, “It is surprising that a man would choose to speak such untruths during a moment when people are celebrating him. On his 60th birthday, instead of gratitude, he chooses to spread lies.”

Wike further highlighted Amaechi’s extensive political career, noting that the former governor served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and as Governor of Rivers State. “He was Speaker in 1999 to 2007. Everybody knows he was the most pompous Speaker. He was living in London as a Speaker. He became a governor 2007 to 2015,” Wike stated.

In addition, Wike pointed out that Amaechi also held a ministerial position for eight years, yet it was only after leaving office that he began to voice concerns about hunger, which Wike claims is a tactic to regain political relevance.

“He was a powerful Speaker and a governor who enjoyed his time in office but never once spoke about hunger during those years,” Wike said. “Now, after leaving government, he suddenly claims hunger exists and aligns himself with opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai because he is hungry for power.”

The FCT Minister’s comments underscore the ongoing political tensions within Nigeria, where rival politicians frequently clash over the country’s challenges and governance.
