Spain’s Lamine Yamal has come under fire on social media after fans noticed what he did after the UEFA Nations League final.
The 24/25 Nations League final between Spain and Portugal took place on Sunday night at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
Spain took the lead twice, due to goals from Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Oyarzabal, but were pegged back by Nuno Mendes and Cristiano Ronaldo strikes.
After 120 minutes of play, the match had to be decided by penalty shootout.
Spain captain Alvaro Morata missed a key penalty kick as Portugal won 5-4, claiming their second Nations League crown.
During the trophy celebrations, people accused Yamal of refusing to clap for the Portugal players, and the video went viral on social media.
The 17-year-old was seen walking away from his teammates and taking off his runner-up medal before leaving down the tunnel.
Yamal was quickly followed by Chelsea’s fullback Marc Cucurella.
On social media, one fan commented: “LAMINE YAMAL REFUSES TO CLAP FOR THE PORTUGAL TEAM AND WALKS AWAY.”
A different person commented: “He should be fined for the disrespect … not just walking away, but also taking the medal off right after.”
It’s possible that Yamal was clapping with his teammates before being caught heading away and towards the tunnel.
The adolescent struggled to beat Portugal’s left-back Mendes and was replaced by Yeremy Pino in extra time.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente explained his decision to remove the Barcelona star, saying: “We wanted to give the game a little more energy.”
“The introduction of Yeremy Pino and Alex Baena gave us that energy, that control of the game that we had lost, as well as our finishing and shooting.” Watch video here
