According to Dalung, the president will still have to contend with mounting resistance even if all 36 state governors switch to the APC and if Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, is appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He clarified that a governor’s defection does not imply public support. Dalung brought up Delta State, where the APC recently welcomed a governor with a contentious mandate. He claimed that a large number of people in the state opposed this action, demonstrating that the defection was not supported by the general public. Dalung went on to say that many Akwa Ibom lawmakers chose to quit rather than defect like their governor had.
This demonstrates that people, not the people they serve, are frequently the ones driving political change. He claimed that by “weaponising” poverty and adversity, President Tinubu has widened the gap between himself and regular Nigerians. Dalung berated the president for asking Nigerians to make sacrifices while leading an opulent life with his family. As a result, Dalung thinks that the people and a powerful coalition of opposition parties would keep opposing Tinubu’s rule.
“Let me tell you this: I’m not a prophet. Even if all 36 state governors defect to the APC and Seyi Tinubu is named INEC chairman, Tinubu will continue to fight alongside the people because he is the only president who has used hunger, poverty, and hardship as weapons. And he has no regrets about it; instead, he is quite arrogant and constantly tells Nigerians to make sacrifices for the better days that lie ahead, all the while he, his wife, and their son lead extravagant lives and spend lavishly throughout Nigeria.
