Okonkwo claims that Obi himself, not external adversaries, has undermined the movement that once brought Nigerians together. “Obi is a politician of convenience, not a politician of conviction.” Obi’s political career is not being killed. Political suicide is what Obi is doing. I mean it, too. “Obi has proved that even if the people vote for him, he doesn’t have what it takes to secure the mandate,” he stated.
He claimed that bad choices and a lacklustre political plan had squandered the optimism that many Nigerians had in the movement. Even before he left, Okonkwo had called the party a “secret society led by a group of clowns.” He claimed that the party’s internal issue and the leadership’s inaction on it were a glaring indication that things were unravelling. Additionally, Okonkwo claimed that Obi’s lack of response to the party’s leadership problems and his ongoing affiliation with divisive personalities demonstrated that he is not a politician with a clear vision or strong moral principles. Instead of being pushed out of politics, the former LP spokesperson claimed that Obi is “committing political suicide.”
In an interview, Okonkwo made this claim and charged Obi with not having the leadership skills necessary to advance Nigeria. He claims that Obi has demonstrated that he has the skills necessary to defend and secure that mandate, even if Nigerians elect him again. Okonkwo claimed that after seeing how Obi ran the party during the 2023 elections, he lost faith in his ability to lead. In July 2024, he formally resigned from the Labour Party, stating that Obi’s actions had persuaded him that the party could no longer win elections under his direction.
