Inter Milan striker Medhi Taremi has been left stranded in Iran following a series of missile attacks launched by Israel on Tehran, halting all outbound flights and disrupting the player’s plans to join his team at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, as reported by The Nation.
Taremi, 32, had returned to his homeland to accept Iran’s prestigious Footballer of the Year award and also to participate in the national team’s World Cup qualifiers against Qatar and North Korea.
The latter match concluded on Tuesday at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.
He was scheduled to fly directly from Iran to Los Angeles, where Inter Milan is preparing to face Mexican side Monterrey on Wednesday.
However, the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has led to air travel suspensions, leaving Taremi unable to exit the country.
Reports confirm that over 78 individuals have been killed in Iran due to recent airstrikes, including four high-ranking security officials, with more than 300 wounded.
In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes, resulting in three deaths and dozens injured in Israel.
According to Sky Italia, Inter Milan officials remain in “constant contact” with Taremi and are urgently exploring alternative options to secure his safe passage to the U.S.
The Club World Cup, featuring top teams from around the globe, is expected to draw significant attention.
Taremi’s absence, even temporarily, is a setback for Inter Milan’s preparations.
Inter Milan is hopeful he will be able to join the squad before kickoff on Wednesday.
