Witnesses reported seeing dense smoke rising from the blast location as residents fled in fear. It was horrible. A local trader who barely survived the explosion, Chidi Okoro, stated, “The ground shook and people were screaming.” “Many of the bodies I saw on the ground were seriously injured.”
In order to remove victims and secure the area, emergency responders—including police and medical personnel—were quickly sent to the scene. According to reports, hospitals in the area are overflowing with victims, some of whom have serious injuries. Because of the delicate nature of the situation, a medical official at a neighbouring hospital said, “We are doing everything possible to save lives.” The official asked to remain anonymous. The reason and perpetrators of the explosion are still being investigated, according to the Imo State Police Command, which verified the occurrence. Police spokesperson ASP Henry Okoye issued a statement saying, “As we seek to understand the circumstances behind this tragic event, we urge the public to remain calm and vigilant.” As of the time of this publication, no group has taken credit for the attack.
Residents are furious over the explosion and are demanding more robust security measures to stop future attacks.
