Azeezat: I’m a Muslim, but when actors only offered me Muslim roles in films, I stopped covering my hair.

In order to break free from the constraints of typecasting in the Nigerian film business, well-known Nollywood actress Azeezat Shorunmu has spoken candidly about a very personal choice she made early in her acting career: to quit covering her hair…CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Shorunmu discussed how her appearance caused her to be consistently cast primarily in parts depicting Muslim women, limiting her creative development, in an interview posted on Oyinmomo TV’s official YouTube page on Tuesday, July 2, 2025. She said, “Although I am a Muslim, I stopped covering my hair when actors only offered me Muslim movie roles.” “They would only contact me when I was considered for a position or went to auditions if it entailed portraying a Muslim woman. I started to feel confined.

Shorunmu reaffirmed her religion and explained that the decision was a professional decision to further her acting career rather than a break from her religious convictions. She declared, “At my core, I remain a Muslim.” “But like any other actor, I also want to be able to express myself and play a variety of roles.” Her comments shed light on the continuing discussion in Nollywood regarding the difficulties actors encounter due to restricted representation and stereotyping based on personal identity, religion, or looks.

Shorunmu, who is renowned for her self-assurance and independent voice, reaffirmed her dedication to upholding industry professional limits. “I’ve never dated a Nollywood star. I don’t mix my personal and professional lives,” she said. Fans and other creatives are praising her for her honest reflections, with many praising her for breaking down barriers while staying loyal to her values. Shorunmu’s narrative highlights the value of inclusivity and creative flexibility, both on and off screen, as the Nollywood industry develops.
