The Ikorodu, Lagos, Coroner’s Court has recommended that nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe face charges for her involvement in the demise of well-known musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, also referred to as Mohbad. The court claims that she gave Mohbad an injection without first contacting a doctor or getting permission from one. The court determined that this was both illegal and unprofessional. The coroner stated that the auxiliary nurse had no legal right to treat patients unsupervised and that she acted without a doctor’s order. The decision was made over ten months after Mohbad’s untimely death in September 2023 caused tremendous sadness and mistrust throughout Nigeria. A formal inquest into the events surrounding his last hours was held as a result of public outcry. Although initial conjecture suggested potential external harm or conflict, the court’s conclusions have now decisively shifted focus to medical misconduct.
The magistrate recommended that the Director of Public Prosecution initiate criminal charges against Ogedengbe for “gross negligence and unlawful medical practice” in accordance with Section 29 of the Lagos Coroner Law. Public demands for accountability have been rekindled by this suggestion, not only for Mohbad but also for better control over medical procedures in Nigeria.
