Per CBS News, the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Afeni Badu Muhammad, fatally stabbed her manager, Jennifer Harris, out of anger.

In a statement, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said that on the morning of Thursday, July 11, 2025, Harris instructed Muhammad to return home after she reported for work. That was before Muhammad’s scheduled shift ended.

And though Muhammad initially left, she came back with a knife. Authorities also said that Muhammad gained access to the restaurant by passing through the employee entrance, adding that she was also wearing a mask.

The 26-year-old suspect is said to have repeatedly stabbed her manager after she encountered the victim inside the restaurant.

“A customer at the drive-through window was lawfully carrying a concealed weapon. The customer fired his weapon to try to stop the assault,” the statement. “Muhammad then fled to her vehicle and was followed by the armed customer. The customer held Muhammad at gunpoint until the Eastpointe Police arrived on scene.”

Authorities said Harris was a mother of six, and she had been an employee at the restaurant for 15 years. Muhammad has since been charged with first degree premeditated murder, which is a mandatory life without parole offense, and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, a five-year felony.

Muhammad’s bond was set at $25 million cash/surety only. “If bond is posted, Muhammad must wear a steel cuff tether, report daily to community corrections, no drug or alcohol use with testing, no contact with any of the victim’s family, and cannot return to McDonald’s,” the statement said.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido described Harris’ killing as an “absolutely senseless and heartbreaking tragedy.” “A life was taken in an act of unimaginable violence. The victim leaves behind six children, six young lives that will now grow up without a parent. This isn’t just a statistic; this is a family shattered, a future forever altered,” Lucido added.

“It is deeply troubling that we continue to see violence used as a response to conflict. How have we reached a point where, for some, the solution to a disagreement or problem is to pick up a weapon instead of finding a way to resolve differences peacefully? This should not be normal, and it must not be accepted as the status quo,” Lucido continued.

“Our office is committed to pursuing justice for the victim and her family. People have to understand that their lives, and the lives of others, have value. This tragedy should serve as a call to action for all of us.”
