The Mahwelereng Regional Court, Limpopo sentenced Monethe on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
The horrific incident occurred in the early hours of 16 December 2023 at approximately 02:00, in Mapela Ga-Chaba, Polokwane when the elderly victim was awakened by a loud bang at her kitchen door.
Upon investigating the noise, an unknown suspect grabbed her from behind, pushed her to the ground, and proceeded to r3pe her.
After the assault, the perpetrator forced the victim to unlock the door for him. As they approached the gate, the victim spotted her neighbor and screamed for help, causing the accused to flee. The quick-thinking neighbor immediately alerted other community members and reported the incident.
Crucial evidence was left behind when the suspect abandoned his underwear at the scene, which community members identified as belonging to the accused. This led to Monethe Prince’s arrest on the same day, 16 December 2023.
The case faced initial delays due to identity disputes and was not immediately enrolled. However, DNA evidence conclusively linked the accused to the crime, leading to the case being reinstated and finalized today, 17 July 2025.
The investigation was expertly handled by Warrant Officer Chuene Selolo of the Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the swift action of the community and the thorough investigation, stating: “This life sentence sends a clear message that we will not tolerate violence against our vulnerable community members, particularly our elderly citizens.
