She related an event in which she joined a group of peasants to a river to swim, against her older sister’s cautions. She claimed that this choice resulted in a terrible experience that left a lasting impression on her and was seen by her culture as an indication that the spirit world desired her.
Edjeren described how she went under the water for a few minutes and then surfaced with her ears inexplicably pierced with an additional pair of holes in her testimony on Delafé Testimonies. Fearful that it was the work of a water spirit, the villagers fled the water at once. Later, an elder forewarned her family that she should never again be near huge bodies of water and that wearing earrings in her new piercings was an indication that the spirits were trying to take her. Years of recurrent nightmares about being dragged into the water followed this incident.
Bystanders reported that I vanished for a few minutes after I dove into the sea, according to Joy Edjeren. They saw that I had an additional pair of piercings in my ears as I stood back up. ‘Oh my, there’s mother water in this water,’ it was said as everyone fled the pool. Joy nearly died. An elder advised my family to take me home, prevent me from wearing earrings in my pierced ears, and forbid me from ever again going near rivers or oceans because the spirits there wanted to take me.
