There are several medical reasons why some people pass away while sleeping, and understanding them may help in prevention or early intervention.
1. Heart Attack: One of the most common causes of death during sleep is a heart attack. This occurs when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked. The symptoms may be silent, especially during sleep, and a person may simply not wake up. People with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol are more at risk.
2. Sudden Cardiac Arrest: This is different from a heart attack. It happens when the heart suddenly stops beating due to an electrical malfunction. It can occur without warning and leads to death within minutes if not treated immediately.
3. Sleep Apnea: This is a serious sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. In severe cases, the oxygen level drops dangerously low, and the heart or brain may be affected, leading to death if untreated.
4. Stroke: A stroke can occur during sleep when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. Since the person is asleep, they may not show immediate symptoms, and it might go unnoticed until it’s too late.
