JUST-IN: Ebonyi single mother speaks on selling her newborn for N25 million

Susan Nweze, a 37-year-old single mother from Ebonyi State, on Tuesday denied allegations that she sold her newborn baby for N25 million, clarifying that she received N700,000 for an adoption process…CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at her home in Abakaliki, Nweze dismissed the claims, stating, “My baby was not sold for N25 million. I only received N700,000 for adoption, and all necessary processes were followed and documented.”

The allegations stem from a petition filed by Nweze’s family through their lawyer, Nzogbu Kingsley, to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation, Enugu.

The family claimed that Nweze, in collusion with police officers, sold the baby for N25 million, with Nweze receiving just N700,000.

They further accused the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NAPTIP, and the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs of involvement in the alleged sale, demanding the return of the baby boy.

Nweze explained her decision, saying, “I gave birth at the Police Headquarters Clinic, and I knew I wasn’t ready to raise another child due to my circumstances. I’m a single mother with a 19-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son. I couldn’t take on the responsibility of a new baby.

“The N700,000 was not payment for a sale but compensation to help me recover after delivery.”

She emphasized, “I didn’t give my child up for adoption because of money. It was because I wasn’t prepared to care for him, with no job or support.”

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Ikeuwa Omebeh, described the allegations as baseless. He stated, “The mother gave up the baby for custody and possible adoption due to her financial and emotional instability. The ministry is handling the matter in line with the law, and investigations are ongoing to verify the circumstances surrounding the baby’s birth and paternity.”

Similarly, Mrs. Felicia Nwankpuma, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, denied any involvement in a sale, saying, “I’m shocked by the N25 million claim. I don’t know where that story is coming from. The child is in our custody, and we are ensuring proper care. No baby was sold.”…CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
