Ohikhena claimed in an interview with The Lucky Udu Experience that he took the audacious move at the age of 13. “I believed the aircraft was headed for America.” He remarked, “I had no idea it was just a plane ride from Benin to Lagos.” Security guards apprehended Daniel once the jet touched down in Lagos, and he was later returned to Benin, where the state secret agency took custody of him. “I was with them for a month. They were quite kind to me,” he remembered.
Daniel was reportedly received at the government residence by Adams Oshiomhole, the Edo State governor at the time of the event. “I immediately went to the Benin State Secret Service once they brought me home from Lagos. In order to meet the governor, they drove me to the government house the following morning, Daniel remarked. He received a scholarship that paid for both his high school and college education.
“Yes,” he said, “they awarded me a scholarship from high school to college.”
Daniel claimed that in addition to the scholarship, a number of other commitments were made. “I’ll go to that side I was planning on,” they said. They promised to take me to the United States.
