The incident, which has drawn widespread condemnation, prompted a visit to the school on Monday, August 4, by Education MEC Fundile Gade and senior departmental officials.
In addition to the suspension of the students, the driver of the bus transporting the pupils involved in the incident has also been suspended, according to department spokesperson Vuyiseka Mboxeka.
Disciplinary proceedings against the students are set to commence on Thursday, August 7, led by the provincial office of the department.
A report by the Daily Dispatch quoted a member of the school governing body who revealed that the boys involved had previously been the subject of complaints, including allegations of being caught with alcohol on school grounds. The attack on the girl is believed to have been an act of retaliation after she reported the group for damaging a section of the school’s fence.
The girl’s mother has filed an assault complaint with the police against the students. “I want them to be arrested,” she told the publication.
