A tragic incident has occurred in the Idumoza community of Uromi, located in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, where a hotel under construction collapsed, killing its owner, Andrew Isesere…CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
The incident, which happened on Friday, has left the local community in shock. According to eyewitnesses, the building gave way while Isesere was inside, supervising the ongoing construction work. His lifeless body was recovered from the rubble on Sunday morning, two days after the collapse.
Over 20 Workers Escape Death as Structure Crumbles
More than 20 construction workers were reportedly present on-site when the tragic event unfolded. Most of them narrowly escaped death, though a few sustained minor injuries.
Residents and site workers who witnessed the incident expressed deep sorrow over the loss, while also thanking God that the casualties were not higher.
Eyewitnesses Blame Substandard Materials for the Collapse
According to multiple eyewitness accounts, the building collapse was allegedly caused by the use of inferior construction materials. Locals say the late owner, Andrew Isesere, acted as the project supervisor, and disregarded professional engineering standards.
“The owner was told he was using low-quality materials,” said a neighbour, Andrew Inegbebor.
“He used 12mm rods instead of the recommended 16mm for the pillars. There was no base basket at the pillars. There was no structural engineer on site either. This is the result.”
Many believe that the absence of a certified building engineer and the use of substandard rods and concrete may have weakened the building’s foundation, leading to the tragic collapse.
The Dangers of Poor Building Practices in Nigeria
This heartbreaking incident is not an isolated one. Nigeria has witnessed numerous building collapses in recent years, often traced back to:
Use of substandard materials
Lack of qualified structural engineers
Poor oversight by regulatory authorities
Cutting corners to save costs
In many cases, the consequences have been devastating, resulting in loss of lives, property damage, and ongoing court battles.
Authorities Yet to Respond as Investigation Begins
When contacted for comment, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, said he was not yet briefed on the matter.
Local residents, however, are calling for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and to ensure similar tragedies are prevented in future. Community members also emphasized the need for strict enforcement of building codes and better regulatory supervision.
What Can Be Learned from This Tragedy?
This incident brings to light key issues plaguing Nigeria’s construction sector:
1. Always Hire Certified Professionals
Every construction project should involve licensed architects, engineers, and surveyors. Cutting costs by hiring unqualified personnel increases the risk of structural failure.
2. Prioritize Quality Over Cost
Using low-grade rods, cement, or inadequate foundations might save money short term, but can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
3. Government Must Enforce Building Regulations
State and local authorities must conduct routine site inspections and penalize builders who violate safety standards.
4. Public Awareness is Key
Community members must be educated about the dangers of illegal construction practices, especially in rapidly developing urban and semi-urban areas….CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
