Under Dr. Nonye Soludo’s empowerment program, around 3,000 girls in Anambra State have applied for training in traditionally male-dominated sectors including mechanics and CCTV installation. The program, which was initially intended for 50 participants, will now be conducted in phases. The governor’s wife has promised to fully sponsor and later empower the first group. The girls’ enthusiasm was commended by Mrs. Soludo, who said they could compete with men in the crafts. She cautioned that animosity frequently feeds gender-based violence and urged women to foster peace in their families while speaking at the August Women’s Summit in Awka. She stressed the importance of respecting family roles while also pointing out that women can occasionally be involved in marital disputes.
Twelve states’ by-elections were marred by riots, arrests, and allegations of vote-buying. In Ogun, PDP politicians and INEC staff were arrested with cash, despite the party’s description of it as intimidation. The PDP claimed that security forces abducted its candidate Princess Esther Dawaki and 25 of her supporters in Kaduna, while the APC called for cancellation after Kano police arrested 288 thugs. Security guards reportedly seized more than ₦26 million from a suspected vote-buying operation in Kaduna, while parties in Oyo and Anambra were charged with using money to sway voters. Voters in Anambra reportedly received payments ranging from ₦10,000 to ₦25,000, and some accepted since they were having financial difficulties. A man in Ondo extorts N500,000 from his family by pretending to be kidnapped. Bello Azeez, 29, has been taken into custody by the Ondo State Police Command for planning his own kidnapping in an attempt to get N500,000 from his friends and family. Azeez, from Ipele in Owo LGA, allegedly staged the kidnapping when his father denied him a loan to pay off a debt, according to police spokesperson DSP Olushola Ayanlade. Prior to making distress calls and instructing friends and family to transfer ransom funds into his personal bank account, he stated that he was on his way to Ibadan on August 11.
When his family questioned the strange payment request, suspicions increased, and they called the police. He had never left Owo during the alleged ordeal, investigators eventually found. He confessed to the crime after being found and taken into custody. Ayanlade asked parents to steer their children away from crime and cautioned that greed and dishonesty may ruin lives.
