Speaking in Lagos at the annual conference of the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents, Onyema praised the federal government for establishing a more stable foreign exchange policy, claiming that this has improved airline planning. He gave special attention to the government’s proposal to set up a leasing business that would supply Nigerian airlines with aircraft at single-digit prices. He said that this would remove the heavy weight of high-interest financing, which currently costs local firms about 35 percent. Additionally, Onyema praised the granting of dry leases for Nigerian airlines, calling it a “game changer.”
According to him, the action will lower expenses, boost local airlines’ prospects for expansion, and assist rebuild industry trust. “The days of the government trying to shut down airlines are finished.
