Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, a lawyer, has written an open letter to Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, seeking clarification on the state of Nigeria’s economy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In the letter, dated August 18, 2025, Dr. Jaja, who has a long history of teaching and mentoring students in both arts and law, said he recently watched a video in which Oyedele explained the country’s economic situation.
He called on the presidential adviser to simplify complex economic concepts for the understanding of ordinary Nigerians.
“On behalf of the majority of Nigerians who are not ‘seasoned’ economists like yourself, we plead for your good self to explain in simple and unambiguous terms some of these complex economic concepts,” Dr. Jaja wrote.
He questioned why, despite claims by Oyedele and World Trade Organization Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala that the Nigerian economy is stabilised and growing under the Tinubu administration, many Nigerians continue to experience widespread poverty.
“My question is this: of all these explanations and the recent statement by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala that the Nigerian economy is stabilised and growing under PBAT, why are the majority of Nigerians still impoverished?” he asked.
Dr. Jaja also raised concerns over the continued borrowing by the government, asking: “If the economy is stabilised and growing, why are we still obtaining loans?”
The letter culminated in a request for clarification on a key distinction that has sparked public debate: “What is the difference between loans and debts?” He noted that Oyedele had suggested that President Tinubu is obtaining foreign loans, not incurring debts for Nigeria, and asked for a clear explanation.
