Kylee Monteiro, a recent high school graduate who was 11 weeks pregnant, had been missing since Aug. 7, police and her family said. She had last been seen in the area of Country Street in Rehoboth, Mass., according to police.

Gregory Groom, Monteiro’s ex-boyfriend, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with murder after he allegedly confessed to killing Monteiro last week, Bristol County, Mass., prosecutors said during Groom’s arraignment on Wednesday.

On Aug. 8, Groom contacted police, saying that his girlfriend was missing and reporting that she had been “at his house, she was looking for a place to stay, they got into an argument and that she ultimately left his residence,” prosecutors said. Groom further said that she “hadn’t been seen or heard from since,” according to prosecutors.

After friends and family hadn’t heard from Monteiro, police visited Groom’s residence and began an investigation, prosecutors said.

Groom told investigators that Monteiro was 11 weeks pregnant and had told him that he was the unborn child’s father, according to prosecutors. He further said that on Aug. 6, the day before Monteiro disappeared, she had “left a residential program and took a rideshare to his house” and was looking to stay with him, prosecutors said. Groom said his argument with Monteiro was about “whether or not he would allow her to stay on his property,” according to prosecutors.

An ABC News request for additional comment sent to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately receive a response.

Last week, Mointeiro’s older sister, Faith Monteiro, told ABC News that her younger sibling had been living at a homeless shelter for pregnant women in Pembroke, Mass., for the past few weeks because she and Groom’s relationship was “on and off” at the time and they had been experiencing “domestic issues,” Faith Monteiro said, including a physical altercation that allegedly occurred the night before she disappeared.

Investigators learned from Faith Monteiro that the night her sister arrived at Groom’s house, Kylee texted Faith, allegedly saying that Groom “threw me on the ground and pulled my hair and strangled me,” prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, Monteiro also allegedly told her sister that her “phone is at 4% and if I die, it was Greg.”

The family tried to get in touch with Monteiro to move her to a safer location but she replied that she was “attempting to continue to stay at Mr. Groom’s residence,” prosecutors said.

Officials conducted a search of Groom’s 25-acre property on Aug. 14 but “nothing of significance was found,” prosecutors said.

Then on Tuesday, Groom reported to police for another interview and allegedly admitted that on Aug. 6, he had gotten into an altercation with Monteiro during which he “pushed her, she fell backwards and she hit her head,” prosecutors said.

When Monteiro attempted to contact another individual, Groom allegedly said that he told Monteiro that he would “knock her cellphone out of her hand,” according to prosecutors.

Investigators continued to press Groom on Monteiro’s whereabouts and informed him that they were granted a search warrant for his residence and were “prepared to search the property and dig if necessary,” prosecutors said.

At that point, Groom began to draw a “rudimentary map” showing a shed on his property “where he was known to stay” and where he allegedly said that the argument between him and Monteiro took place, according to prosecutors. He allegedly confessed that he stabbed Monteiro “twice in the neck and once in the chest,” and that the stab wound in the chest broke off the knife’s blade, prosecutors said.

“Based on that stabbing, Ms. Monteiro was deceased,” prosecutors said on Wednesday.

Groom allegedly told police that he then spent “several hours” digging a hole in the woods, approximately 20 yards from where he stabbed her, prosecutors said, then “pushed her body into a hole and covered it up” after sunrise.

After Groom’s alleged confession, officers went to his property and found a “large pile of brush” with cut-down trees in the woods. Approximately 5 feet underneath this area, a “body consistent with Kylee Monteiro was discovered,” prosecutors said.

Monteiro’s body is currently with the medical examiner undergoing “identification process” and an autopsy, prosecutors said.

Along with the murder charge, Groom has also been charged with assault and battery on a pregnant victim, assault and battery on a family or household member, and aggravated intimidation of a witness, juror, police or court official, prosecutors said.

Bristol Count District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn told reporters after the arraignment that it is “still too early” to determine the motive for this murder but the investigation will continue.
