He has described how prayers saved his life during a 2021 raid on his home by the Department of State Services (DSS). Speaking to Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, the Olowo of Owo, during a courtesy call, Igboho said that only divine intervention allowed him to survive. “They did a great job firing guns at me, but you, my fathers, had your prayers answered,” he added.

The activist called the invasion an attempt on his life. He said that the agents targeted him directly in an attempt to silence him, saying, “They wanted to kill me when my house was invaded but failed.” He refuted popular reports that he was seriously hurt. He clarified, “There was nothing of the sort. Some people said my leg was broken, and others said my intestines were shattered.”

There was chaos and bloodshed during the midnight assault on his Ibadan house on July 1, 2021; sources confirmed that two of his aides were slain and numerous more were taken into custody. When Igboho tried to escape to Germany, he was apprehended at the airport after making a tight escape and then resurfacing in the Benin Republic. Human rights advocates and Yoruba self-determination organisations were incensed by his arrest in Cotonou until diplomatic initiatives led to his eventual release. Conversations concerning official persecution, security overreach, and the dangers faced by vocal activists in Nigeria have been rekindled by Igboho’s new testimony.
