The woman, who went by the name Hauwa Usman, emphasised that “ill-gotten wealth never lasts” and claimed to have opted for integrity over temptation.
Hauwa claims that when she went to take out her regular N25,000 monthly salary, she saw an odd balance that was approaching millions. She was so shocked by the revelation that she called her bank right away to report the mistake. The bank employees initially believed she was mistaken, but after double-checking, it was determined that a technological error had caused the money to be deposited into her account incorrectly.
Hauwa told reporters on Monday that she never thought about keeping the money. “I was aware right away that it wasn’t mine. I wouldn’t have benefited from taking it, and I would have lived in continual worry. Even though my income is little, it is halal and provides me with comfort,” she remarked. Her choice has drawn great praise from locals and others. Religious leaders, community leaders, and regular Nigerians have hailed Hauwa as a shining example in a nation that is frequently beset by financial mismanagement and corruption. Many regarded her behaviour as a reminder that even the most lowly people of society may be honourable.
Since then, the bank’s management has fixed the mistake and thanked Hauwa for being honest. Additionally, some well-wishers have encouraged government authorities to legally recognise her, while local benefactors are reportedly considering compensating her for her act of integrity. But for Hauwa, the lesson is straightforward. “I didn’t do it for any kind of benefit. Since it was the proper thing to do, I gave the money back. God will, in my opinion, bless me in ways that money cannot buy.
