The self-styled “Indaboski” claimed in a sermon to his audience that his own experience in the United States demonstrated that the popular notion that America is better than Nigeria is overblown. Odumeje declared, “I have visited the much-lauded United States, and it is not superior to Nigeria.” People often talk about America being a utopia, but my experience there made me realise how fortunate we are in Nigeria, which we sometimes take for granted. My pride is Nigeria.

At a time when many Nigerians saw moving overseas, or “japaa,” as the only way out of financial difficulties, supporters praised the pastor for encouraging patriotism.
