In an interview with the Edmund Obilo Podcast, Sarumi-Aliyu described how prominent Nigerian women like the late Alaba Lawson encouraged her to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Later, they presented her to Obasanjo, who was the ADC’s spokesperson at the time.
She claimed that Obasanjo gave her words of support and welcomed her to the celebration. He made it quite apparent to me that he had nothing against women running for governor. He merely asked me to demonstrate to the public that ADC was a forum for women and young people, she said. BASA put a lot of effort into making the party known in Oyo, but eventually she came to the conclusion that she had little chance of winning the governorship ticket.
She made the decision to discuss her decision to leave with Obasanjo personally. “Daddy, please pardon me, but I have to leave ADC,” I pleaded over the phone. I didn’t enter politics with the intention of resigning or merely obtaining an appointment. “Until God assigns my time as governor, I came to contest fully,” she remarked.
