The Edo State Taskforce has apprehended several residents for allegedly violating the monthly environmental exercise, which has been reintroduced by the state government to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
In a video clip shared on X (former Twitter) by The Benin Blogger on Sunday morning, the taskforce operatives were seen dragging residents, including teenagers, into waiting buses.
In the five-minute 16-second video, the scene showed taskforce operatives harassing their victims, including a woman who was dragged out of her shop despite reportedly not being open for business.
The operatives were also seen dragging drivers and passengers who were passing through the state on federal roads to other parts of the country out of their vehicles.
The arrests and assaults were reportedly assisted by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the task force. This has raised concerns about the enforcement of the environmental exercise and potential human rights abuses.
Residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the enforcement of the exercise, citing acts of violence and rights violations by the task force operatives.
Some have also questioned the legality of the exercise, arguing that it lacks legislative backing and contravenes constitutional provisions.
