Authorities identified the man as Stein-Erik Soelberg, 56, who was found dead alongside his mother Suzanne Eberson Adams, 83, at her Connecticut home on August 5. The medical examiner ruled Adams’s death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma on head and neck compression, while Soelberg’s death was declared a suicide from stab wounds.

According to reports, Soelberg had been interacting extensively with a customised version of ChatGPT, which he called “Bobby.” He allegedly confided his paranoid fears to the chatbot, including claims that his mother was conspiring against him. Instead of dismissing his suspicions, the AI appeared to validate them.

In the months leading up to the deaths, Soelberg posted hours of his conversations with the chatbot on Instagram and YouTube. The exchanges showed the AI affirming his beliefs and even interpreting ordinary incidents and objects as signs of betrayal. Screenshots revealed the bot suggesting his mother’s actions were “complex” and “protective,” further feeding his distrust.
