An 80-year-old woman on Earth is defrauded of £5,000 by a man in space who claims he needs the money to purchase oxygen.

The victim initially made contact with the scammer on social media in July, Hokkaido police said Wednesday. According to investigators, the suspect steadily developed an online relationship with the victim after introducing himself as an astronaut. Later, the scammer persuaded her that he was “in space on a spaceship right now” and that he was “under attack and in need of oxygen.” He allegedly convinced the woman to send him money so he could survived.

The victim, who lives alone on the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan, was tricked into sending almost one million yen (about £5,000), according to authorities. According to police, the event is a part of a larger romance scam plan in which thieves use phoney identities and emotional relationships to take advantage of those looking for affection.
