JUST-IN: Black Mom and Her Kids Accidentally Evicted, Apartment Complex Apologizes

Nationwide — Storm Burris, an African American mother from Ferguson, Missouri, was devastated when her family was wrongfully evicted after apartment staff cleared out the wrong unit. A door number mix-up left her children’s belongings thrown away, stolen, or destroyed……CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>

Burris lived at Renewal Heights Apartments, formerly Canfield Green. She said she returned home around noon after dropping her kids at school and found her furniture, electronics, jewelry, and clothes dumped into a dumpster, according to KSDK. Police later confirmed that the apartment manager had mistakenly ordered the wrong unit cleaned out. Records showed Burris still had one month left on her lease and had already paid her rent in full. Officers listed the case as a burglary.

The leasing office admitted the mistake and offered her $5,000 plus one month of free rent. But Burris refused, saying her losses far exceeded the offer, naming iPads, jewelry, a safe, and a $2,000 engagement ring among the valuables she would never get back.

She also claimed the eviction crew dumped her packed totes into the trash, then reused them to carry items she suspected they wanted to keep. Police later escorted her to workers’ apartments, where she recovered some property. However, most of it was returned broken, stained, or smelling of garbage.

On her lawyer’s advice, Burris decided to leave the unit altogether. She and her children are now staying with family and friends. She said she wants accountability and community support after losing nearly everything through no fault of her own.

Burris has since started a GoFundMe to help her family rebuild. The fundraiser has already raised more than $7,000 so far……CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
