According to Dumebi Kachikwu, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu deliberately utilised his final days in office to back the David Mark-led ADC group in order to issue a political warning to President Bola Tinubu. Kachikwu described it as Yakubu’s overt show of disdain for the president and stated that he had long anticipated such behaviour.

Speaking Thursday on the Politics Today program on Channels Television, Kachikwu chastised Yakubu for choosing to enter the ADC’s leadership race when many court proceedings related to the matter were still unresolved. This announcement followed INEC’s earlier Thursday public acknowledgement of the Mark-led ADC executives through the publication of their details on its official website. But Kachikwu took a tough stand against Yakubu, accusing him of leaving a poor legacy and describing him as one of Nigeria’s worst choices. “I still believe that the Nigerian courts will fairly resolve this matter,” he said.

In the end, the judiciary will choose how this matter is settled. “I never thought Yakubu would act responsibly on this matter,” he said. His term has been a serious miscalculation for the country. Thankfully, he will be departing shortly, and I am confident that the legal system will make things right. “I didn’t believe he would take any further action.
