FG gives fresh update on panel reviewing Nnamdi Kanu’s health status

Suraj Sa’ada (SAN), the prosecution counsel on the ongoing trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has given more insight on the assessment by the medical panel saddled with the responsibility of reviewing the health status of the Biafra agitator.

Recall that the IPOB leader had earlier asked the court to make an order mandating his movement from a Department of State Services facility to the National Hospital to attend to his failing health.

Kanu also petitioned the World Medical Association stating that he was facing some of the health challenges while in the custody of the secret police.

Following his application to the court, Justice James Omotosho in a ruling mandated the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to set up a panel of medical experts to assess Kanu’s health and give a detailed report on whether the IPOB leader is fit to continue with his terrorism trial.

However, Sa’ada while addressing the court on Wednesday said the panel set up by the NMA to assess Kanu’s health was yet to conclude its investigations.

Sa’ada on behalf of the Federal Government and the DSS pleaded with the court to allow the panel more time as the experts are focused on delivering a thorough job.

He also prayed the court to give an additional one week to the panel of medical experts to conclude their investigation and submit its report and recommendations to the court.

Following Sa’ada’s oral request to the court, Kanu’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) did not object to the one-week adjournment sought by the prosecution counsel.

The presiding judge further adjourned the matter till October 16, for hearing.
