The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has called on the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe to leave his party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akpabio made this appeal to Abaribe, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) at the plenary on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
Speaking while informing the lawmakers of the defection of Kelvin Chukwu, a member of the Labour Party, Akpabio said Abaribe was the only one who was not part of the ruling party.
He noted that the Abia lawmaker’s political party was already in disarray and as such Abaribe needed to make hay while the sun shines.
His words, “Your party is in tatters, what are you waiting for?
“Look at Abaribe, as soon as I mentioned the word defection, his face got tightened. I will still mention it no matter how you want to look at me,” Akpabio stated.
Speaking further, the Senate President jokingly said that Senator Abba Moro, a former minister of interior is currently on his way to join the ruling APC.
“You’re the only one left there, Senator Abaribe, even Abba Moro is on his way to join me.
The Senate President went ahead to read the defection letter from Kelvin Chukwu to the Red Chamber.
The letter read in part, “Dear Senate President, I write to formally notify you and my distinguished colleagues in the Nigerian Senate of my decision to resign my membership with the Labour Party.
“And to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) effective immediately,” he added.
