University Lecturers’ Group Distances Itself from Ongoing ASUU Strike

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has dissociated itself from the ongoing strike reportedly declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In a statement signed by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the group dismissed social media reports claiming it joined ASUU in the industrial action affecting Nigerian universities.

“CONUA wishes to categorically clarify that it has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” Sunmonu said.

The Union President explained that the union remains focused on maintaining academic stability and believes dialogue, not disruption, is the best way to address challenges in the education sector.

According to him, CONUA had no reason to embark on a strike since its earlier concerns had been resolved.
He recalled that the union once protested its exclusion from the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement inaugurated in October 2024.

Sunmonu revealed that following the protest, CONUA met with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, who assured them that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be expanded to include all academic unions.
He added that the ministry has since fulfilled that promise.

Niyi further stated that after congresses were held across the country between September 18 and 24, members unanimously agreed that no strike action should be taken.

Dr. Sunmonu urged CONUA members to continue carrying out their academic and administrative duties and appealed to Vice-Chancellors to ensure their safety in the workplace.

He also advised students to stay focused on their studies while assuring them of CONUA’s commitment to quality education and national development.

The Congress of University Academics, CONUA was formed as a breakaway group from ASUU and has often taken a different position from the main union, especially on strike actions.
