Senator Benson Konbowei, representing Bayelsa Central, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His resignation was contained in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Thursday.
Konbowei said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, political associates, and leaders within and outside Bayelsa state.
“After due consultation with my family, my associates, my political leaders in my state, and across the nation, I have resolved to join the governor of my state, the state of Bayelsa, His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, to resign my membership of the party,” he said.
The senator said his defection was a result of the protracted leadership crisis and divisions within the PDP, especially at the national level.
“In coming to this decision, I’ve taken a deep look at the protracted leadership crisis and the division that has resulted from the competition for power within the Peoples Democratic Party, especially at the national level,” he added.
The senator said he could no longer remain in a party that had lost direction.
“So, I hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party and hereby declare my total loyalty, support and movement to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he stated.
