Felix Morka, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) has explained why key politicians including state governors are defecting from opposition parties to the ruling party.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Morka debunked claims that the ruling party is mounting pressure on opposition members to join the APC.
According to him, politicians who are leaving the opposition parties for the ruling APC are only exercising their legitimate rights in line with democratic principles guiding the country.
“People are simply exercising their democratic freedom to choose among competing party alternatives, and they are choosing our party,” Morka stated.
He noted that the gale of defections rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party and the likes thereof do not pose a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Also denying claims that Nigeria was drifting towards a one-party system, Morka noted that the APC cannot in itself, become a gatekeeper and decide who joins the party or not.
He urged the PDP, Labour Party and the new coalition party to look inwards and make efforts to fix the leadership crisis rocking the parties.
“The APC is a party of method and hope under the leadership of the President, who is enacting hope for everyone.
“Our macroeconomic indicators are improving – inflation is now around 18% – and it will continue to go down, translating to more food on the table for Nigerians,” he said.
