Nigeria’s Gas Sector Has Achieved Great Progress Under Tinubu’s Leadership – Engr. Farouk Ahmed

Nigeria’s gas industry has recorded remarkable progress under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to the Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed.

Speaking during the extraordinary Governing Board sessions of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha, Qatar, Ahmed said that Nigeria’s reforms in the midstream gas sector are driving stability, investment, and sustainable growth across the entire gas value chain.

Ahmed, who represented Nigeria at the sessions and several side meetings, explained that recent policy clarity and regulatory improvements are unlocking opportunities for both domestic gas utilisation and international collaboration.

“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, the Nigerian gas sector has moved from policy promises to measurable progress. Our regulatory clarity, infrastructure expansion, and focus on cleaner energy solutions have made the midstream segment the heartbeat of Nigeria’s energy reform,” Ahmed said.

He noted that the administration’s commitment to building robust gas infrastructure—ranging from pipelines and processing facilities to storage and conversion plants—has positioned Nigeria for significant industrial and economic growth.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, also stressed that Nigeria’s participation in the GECF aligns with the country’s foreign policy objectives, which prioritise economic diplomacy and global energy cooperation.

“Energy diplomacy is one of the anchors of the Renewed Hope Agenda. Nigeria’s active role at the GECF reflects the President’s commitment to ensuring that Africa has a strong, responsible, and respected voice in shaping the global energy transition,” Tuggar said.

Nigeria’s delegation will continue high-level engagements throughout the week, focusing on global gas cooperation, energy transition strategies, and leadership of the Forum. The team is also expected to present Nigeria’s official candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the GECF during the Ministerial Session on Thursday.
