Nollywood actor Williams Uchemba has urged the Nigerian government to adopt public execution as punishment for convicted kidnappers, arguing that visible consequences are key to deterring crime.
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Friday, the actor stressed that failure to enforce strict punishment only encourages criminal behaviour.
He compared the situation to a parent who fails to properly discipline a child caught stealing, warning that such negligence breeds hardened criminals.
Uchemba also referenced China, noting that the Asian country imposes the death penalty for serious crimes such as kidnapping and corruption.
He said, “We have a constitution that guides this country, but when it comes to enforcing it, we are not as vocal or decisive as we should be.
“The capital punishment for kidnapping is death, yet when offenders are arrested, we hardly hear what happens afterward.
“If you ask me, there should even be a dedicated channel that broadcasts the arrest and public execution of kidnappers. Until we start enforcing real consequences for these crimes, nothing will change.
“We all want Nigeria to be like China, but we lack the courage to do what China does. In China, the punishment for kidnapping and corruption is death.”
Uchemba made the call in reaction to the rising cases of kidnapping across the country, which have sparked fear among citizens as the festive season approaches.
