Pamela Reynolds is alleged to have neglected to care for her seriously ill father

A woman left her elderly father to decay in a chair before he was found covered in faeces and maggots, according to police.

Pamela Reynolds, 54, told police in Pensacola, Florida, she was the caregiver for her elderly father during questioning at a hospital where he was being treated for serious health conditions. An arrest report reviewed by Law&Crime stated Reynolds’ dad, whose age was not provided, suffered from numerous health issues, including diabetes and heart failure.

When officers spoke with hospital employees who treated her dad, they said he suffered from necrosis, was covered in faeces and “severely malnourished”. Reynolds is alleged to have to told police she had not moved her dad from his recliner for about two months.

According to the arrest report, Reynolds’ dad had been given treatment and had his injuries cleaned when police arrived. After police arrived at the hospital and saw him in the intensive care unit, the responding officer reportedly said “I could smell decaying flesh” coming from the victim.

The man was “unable to move himself”, and the officer said there were several injuries to his body as he was photographed by crime scene technicians. One of the injuries was allegedly “the size of a softball with black and yellow tissue, pus, and fluids coming out.”

Medical staff who treated him told police the injury to his right hip was necrotic and the wound had “maggots and faeces”. When police questioned Reynolds, she reportedly said she had bathed him regularly with soap and water as well as giving him medicine while in her care.

She is alleged to have said she had not taken her dad to the doctor since January and that he had not been moved from the recliner since early June “because of transportation issues”. She is also alleged to have told police that “she did not see or was not aware” of the injuries her dad had sustained.

Reynolds reportedly told police following a failed attempt to bring her dad to the hospital back in April that she called 911 on July 31, when she saw he had a high heart rate. The report added police had been able to communicate with the dad and that he appeared “cognitively aware” about why he was in the hospital.

He alleged that “he had been lying in the chair for several months”. Reynolds, who was said to have cried during her interview with police, was apprehended on August 4 on one count of neglect of an elderly or disabled adult with great bodily harm.

She has been booked in the Escambia County Jail and is being held on a $10,000 (£7,435) bond. Her arraignment is set for August 22.
