The 62-year-old actor sparked concern on Chinese social media when he posted videos on Douyin showing himself resting in a hospital bed with his eyes closed.
In his initial post on 17 August, Li wrote in English: “I’ve recently faced an unexpected challenge.” Later that day, he shared a clip of being wheeled into the operating theatre, humourously noting the “fashionable little red hat” he wore during the procedure.
Following the surgery, Li posted another video from his hospital bed where he was seen attending a meeting and assuring fans, “I feel much better now.” He also revealed a visible wound on the right side of his neck.
Li further updated fans on Weibo on 18 August, sharing a photo of himself enjoying a bowl of knife-cut noodles. “I have left the factory and am eating something delicious,” he wrote in Chinese, thanking supporters for their well-wishes and wishing everyone good health and happiness.
According to Hong Kong film producer Tiffany Chen, a close friend of Li, the surgery was performed to remove a small benign tumour. Li, who became a Singapore citizen, has previously managed hyperthyroidism, diagnosed in 2010.
The actor has four daughters from two marriages: Li Si and Li Taimi from his first marriage to Huang Qiuyan, and Jane and Jada with his current wife, Nina Li Chi.
