Police Inspector and Complicit Parties Arrested in Edo for Robbery and Harassment of Civilians

In a statement issued in Benin on Sunday, Moses Yamu, a police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest when contacted. He explained that the case was brought to light after a victim claimed in a widely shared video that some police officers had kidnapped him, confiscated his phone and other possessions, and intimidated him. Monday Agbonika, the state commissioner of police, ordered a prompt investigation and the arrest of individuals responsible after receiving the information. The suspects were apprehended by Ugbowo Surveillance Team agents on August 15, 2025, while they were operating a silver Toyota Yaris. They also yielded a number of incriminating things.

A serving police inspector was among those detained after being apprehended with three civilian accomplices on charges of harassing and extorting local residents. The police responded by calling the act unlawful and humiliating and emphasising that the suspects would be held accountable. Assuring that any police officer found guilty of extortion, brutality, or corruption will be fired, detained, and charged with a crime, the Commissioner of Police underlined that the command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, and misconduct.

The public, including the victim in the widely shared video, was also urged by the spokesperson to contribute pertinent information that would aid investigations and guarantee that justice is served.
