Former Minister of Transportation and ex-governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has opened up about his strained relationship with his successor, Nyesom Wike. In an interview with Arise Television, Amaechi said he avoids visiting Rivers State because many of the projects he completed while governor have been abandoned.
Amaechi listed several major projects, including a stadium, a sports village, and a mother and child hospital, which he said are now unused. He also mentioned an orthopedic hospital he built in partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which he claims the current state government has also abandoned.
Despite their differences, Amaechi revealed he once received an award from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology for establishing a medical school. Interestingly, he dedicated the award to Governor Wike, saying he was thankful that Wike didn’t shut down the school.
When asked if he and Wike were still friends, Amaechi refused to answer, saying, “Why go into my private life?” The interview also touched on his personal habits, with the interviewer noting that Amaechi doesn’t drink alcohol. He replied, “Thank God you know I don’t drink alcohol.”
Amaechi also reminded viewers of his former position over Wike, saying, “I was once his boss, whether he likes it or not. I hired him. I could have said no.”
