In a tweet, Obi extended his condolences to the people of Benue, describing the continued loss of lives due to violent attacks as “tragic and senseless.”
Obi’s message followed his earlier remarks on May 28, where he had warned of escalating violence in Benue and neighboring states such as Kogi and Plateau.
In his latest statement, he lamented the persistent killings, stating that the “pain, anguish, and sorrow” experienced by citizens are a “grave indictment” of a nation that continually fails to protect its people.
“The growing wave of violence and bloodshed is not just unacceptable, it is intolerable,” Obi tweeted.
He emphasized that the persistent insecurity in Benue and other conflict-prone areas reflects a national crisis that demands urgent and effective action.

To mitigate this situation, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, recently announced his relocation to Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
This move, aimed at coordinating military operations on the ground, comes in response to ongoing attacks by suspected herders and armed militia groups in rural parts of the state.
Dozens of villagers have been reported killed in recent weeks, with several communities razed and thousands of residents displaced.
The relentless attacks have devastated local populations, leaving behind widespread destruction and humanitarian distress.
Peter Obi welcomed the Army Chief’s decision, describing it as a “welcome shift” toward prioritizing security in the region.
He commended Lt. Gen. Oluyede and his Principal Staff Officers for taking a proactive step that could signal greater military responsiveness to the needs of afflicted communities.
Obi wrote, “I commend the recent move by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oloyede, to relocate along with Principal Staff Officers to Benue State. This decision signals a welcome shift toward prioritizing the security of a region that has endured far too much bloodshed.”
