Attack Video: Benue Under Siege Again: Deadly Attack Hits Makurdi–Naka Route

There was renewed fear and panic in Benue State on Friday evening as suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly attack along the ever-troubled Makurdi–Naka road, leaving several people feared dead and many others injured.

According to Daily post, The assault, which occurred on June 6, threw the area into chaos, disrupting movement and leaving countless commuters stranded as gunshots rang out. Eyewitnesses say the attackers ambushed vehicles and opened fire indiscriminately, causing vehicles to crash as passengers scrambled for safety.

Local sources report that the assailants blocked a section of the road, targeting motorists and residents travelling between Makurdi and Naka. Though the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, it is believed that multiple lives were lost, while survivors sustained varying degrees of injuries.

This latest violence comes just days after Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, relocated to Benue State in a high-profile response to the spike in attacks across the state. Despite this federal presence, large swaths of rural Benue, including parts of the Makurdi–Naka route, remain vulnerable to persistent attacks by armed groups.

The Makurdi–Naka road has long been regarded as one of the most volatile transit corridors in central Nigeria, plagued by recurring incidents linked to militia activities. Residents and advocacy groups continue to call for a more proactive and sustained security response from the government.

The attack not only deepens the humanitarian crisis but also threatens to disrupt economic activity in the area, particularly agriculture — the mainstay of the local economy.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident, but security forces have reportedly been deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further violence. Watch The Attack Videos Here (graphics images)
