She questioned the stories about huge amounts of money her husband allegedly kept abroad. “Who saw the money being moved?” she asked. “Did anyone see signatures or real evidence?” Mariam Abacha believes people are wrongly blaming her husband without clear proof.

According to her, General Abacha kept some money for Nigeria during his time in power. But not long after his death, she claims, that money “vanished” and no one is talking about what happened. “The money that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the money vanished,” she noted. She feels it is unfair that people continue to speak badly about him.
She also raised concerns about how Nigerians treat each other. “Why are we so quick to blame people?” she said. “Is it because of tribe or religion?” She believes Nigerians should be more honest, kind, and united, instead of spreading lies and hatred.
Mariam Abacha added that her husband must have been very powerful and loved, since people are still talking about him nearly three decades later.
