Days prior to the terrible event, Okafor had expressed fears about threats to his life on multiple occasions, according to reports collected from neighbours and family. According to his relatives, he told them that he felt insecure on the compound he was hired to protect. “He made it very evident to us that his life was in jeopardy,” Emmanuel Okafor, his younger brother, told reporters. “We never thought his fears would materialise in such a graphic way.”
The main building of his employer’s house in Enugu’s Independence Layout neighbourhood caught fire late Thursday night. Okafor, who was assigned to the boys’ quarters, was stranded and unable to be saved, while the other residents of the house apparently made it out unscathed. Emergency personnel later retrieved his burned remains. His death’s circumstances have been questioned by family members, who maintain that foul play cannot be ruled out. Ifeanyi, his cousin, questioned, “How is it possible that everyone else escaped, but the security guard who had no history of smoking or cooking inside his room was the only victim?” “We desire a comprehensive inquiry. We want Chukwuma to get justice.
Human rights advocates and civil society organisations in Enugu have also joined the call for accountability, urging the police to carry out an impartial investigation. They emphasised that disadvantaged workers are left exposed since workplace exploitation and negligence instances frequently go unreported. Investigations to determine the cause of the fire have begun, according to the Enugu State Police Command, which also confirmed the occurrence. None of the alternatives are being ruled out. Police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe stated, “The matter is under investigation, and findings will be made public in due course.” Friends characterised Okafor as modest and industrious; he left behind a wife and three small children.
