Hope, who is deaf and uses sign language, was rescued from the streets of Akwa Ibom in 2016 by Danish relief worker Anja Ringgren Lovén. He did exceptionally well in school, receiving one of the best scores in his class.
Lovén celebrated Hope’s incredible journey by sharing this accomplishment on Facebook. In addition to his intelligence, she said, he was a talented artist, a good dancer, and a kind, funny person. After a picture of Lovén providing water to the undernourished two-year-old went viral in 2016, his tale became well-known throughout the world, bringing attention to the predicament of children in Nigeria who are accused of witchcraft.
Under the care of the Children’s Education and Development Foundation, also called Land of Hope, which Lovén co-runs with her husband, Nigerian attorney David Emmanuel Umem, Hope has flourished since his rescue. For kids with comparable charges, the organisation offers education, medical care, and housing. While acknowledging Hope’s development, Lovén thought of the innumerable other kids who have their lives cut short because of such charges.
