The driver, her godmother Nafeeza Samad, was arrested after the vehicle plunged into Dundee Lake, leaving the child trapped inside.
On August 10, the child, Hailey, was strapped into her car seat when the vehicle sank underwater. Authorities said Samad, 23, escaped and climbed onto the roof, but Hailey remained inside until rescuers broke a window and pulled her out. Samad now faces multiple charges, including DUI, according to 11Alive.
First responders performed CPR on Hailey, who was lifeless when they reached her. She was revived and rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she remains under critical care. Doctors confirmed she suffered a severe brain injury and can only breathe on her own. She cannot talk or eat without assistance.
Hailey’s mother, Tamika Whitson, said she has not left her daughter’s side since the accident. She described Hailey as a fighter who continues to show strength despite her critical condition.
To cover rising medical costs, the family launched a GoFundMe, which has so far raised more than $3,500. Funds will help pay for rehab, therapy, medical equipment, lodging, and long-term care. Whitson said prayers, donations, and community support are essential as Hailey faces a long recovery.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your love, your prayers, and your support,” said Whitson. “Hailey is a fighter, and with faith and community, we believe she will continue to push through this storm.”….CONTINUE FULL READING>>>>>
