The victim, identified as Khadijat, a resident of Ile Lase in the Oke-Apomu area, was attacked by a mob at Ipata Market last week after being wrongly linked to kidnap activities. Eyewitnesses claimed she was found with four ATM cards, while her phone was smashed during the assault.
Despite police intervention, Khadijat was rushed to the General Hospital, Ilorin, where she later died from severe injuries. The spokesperson for the state police command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed that officers attempted to save her but could not prevent the tragic outcome.
Condemning the incident, the Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nnafatima Imam, described the mob action as “barbaric, uncivilized, and unacceptable.” She stressed that the government would not tolerate any form of jungle justice, warning that such acts threaten peace and stability in the state.
“Taking the law into one’s hands is an act of incivility. Citizens are urged to report suspects to security agencies for proper investigation and prosecution,” Imam stated.
Meanwhile, Khadijat’s grieving family has demanded justice, maintaining that she was not a kidnapper but a woman who had long battled ill health. In a viral video, her sister tearfully explained that Khadijat lived in poverty, often begged for food, and left behind children.
