Elumelu, in a post via his LinkedIn page on Tuesday, recalled how his appointment at AllStates Trust Bank, then a young financial institution in Nigeria, came at a time when few believed a young person could succeed in such a role.

“When I was 27, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime: I became a branch manager at AllStates Trust Bank, a young bank in Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the banking industry was then on the verge of transformation and disruption, and the chance to lead at such an age gave him the confidence and perspective that shaped his future.

The Chairman of Heirs Holdings noted that his experience has influenced his commitment to empowering young Africans through The Tony Elumelu Foundation, which invests in startups and entrepreneurs across the continent.

“That’s why today, I am passionate about giving young people the same chance I was given. Because I know what’s possible when someone believes in you early,” he stated.

“My journey didn’t begin with capital. It began with trust,” he added.
